How far is Nusa Penida from Ubud?
There is no single direct road distance from Ubud to Nusa Penida because the journey combines a drive and a sea crossing. The usual route is central Ubud to Sanur harbour by car, then Sanur to Nusa Penida by fast boat. Central Ubud to Sanur is approximately 25–30 km by road and usually takes 60–90 minutes. The crossing is approximately 25 km by sea and usually takes 30–45 minutes.
Allow around two hours to reach Nusa Penida before any driving on the island. These are approximate distances and times: Bali traffic, harbour check-in, weather, and sea conditions can all make the journey longer. An early start keeps enough time for a useful day trip.

- Sanur → Nusa Penida — approximately 25 km by sea; usually 30–45 minutes by fast boat

West Trip vs East Trip from Ubud
With the travel time from Ubud, a single day suits the West Trip — Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong, and Crystal Bay are grouped on the western and south-western side of the island. The East Trip (Diamond Beach, Atuh) involves much longer drives on rough roads and is better as a second day or an overnight stay.
If you only have one day from Ubud and want the postcard shots, choose the West Trip. If you can stay a night, do both coasts at a relaxed pace.
Costs and what is included
Budget separately for the Ubud–Sanur road transfer, the return fast-boat ticket (about IDR 200,000–350,000), the island tour, and attraction entrance tickets at each stop. Transfer prices vary by pickup details and provider, so confirm the quote rather than relying on a fixed estimate. Lunch and any occasional harbour fee are also separate.
Our selected island tour includes transport, a driver-guide, island pickup, the Nusa Penida island tax, and parking. We can coordinate the Ubud pickup, boat timing, island tour, and return, but coordination does not mean every leg is included in the base island-tour price. Confirm the written total and inclusions before booking.
How to return from Nusa Penida to Ubud
For the return, take the fast boat from Nusa Penida to Sanur, meet your pre-arranged driver at the harbour, and continue by road to Ubud. The crossing usually takes 30–45 minutes and the Sanur–Ubud drive usually takes 60–90 minutes, before allowing for boarding, disembarkation, and traffic.
Reserve the boat in advance during high season, keep the boat and driver contacts handy, and choose a return sailing with a buffer instead of relying on the final boat. Weather and sea conditions can change the schedule.
